RANDOLPH, VT — Gifford Health Care is pleased to welcome Shelby Bassett, MS, FNP-C, to its hospitalist team at Gifford Medical Center.
Bassett joins Gifford with more than four years of experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care and urgent care settings, as well as more than eight years of nursing experience in inpatient medical-surgical care and nursing leadership.
She earned her Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute and previously worked in both primary care and urgent care in New York before relocating to Vermont with her family in 2025.
Prior to transitioning into her current role as a hospitalist provider, Bassett worked as a registered nurse at Gifford Medical Center.
As a new hospitalist provider, Bassett cares for patients during hospitalization, helping manage acute illness while also coordinating follow-up care and smooth transitions back into the community.
“Hospitalists help care for patients when they’re acutely sick and need to be in the hospital,” Bassett said. “A big part of the role is not only treating the immediate illness, but also helping patients transition back home with appropriate follow-up and a clear plan moving forward.”
Bassett said she was drawn to Gifford’s community-centered approach to care and appreciates the unique scope of rural medicine.
“I really enjoy the small environment,” she said. “I take care of people who live in the community here, and I have coworkers whose kids go to school with mine. I enjoy that connection. At the same time, Gifford is large enough to offer strong specialty support and multiple primary care sites, which creates a great community care environment.”
She describes her care style as collaborative and patient-focused.
“Things are not always black and white,” Bassett said. “I believe in discussing options with patients and families and coming to a plan of care together.”
Bassett and her husband are currently putting down roots in Randolph while raising their two young children. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family and exploring Vermont communities, museums, playgrounds, and outdoor destinations with her children.
