The Gifford laboratory provides excellence in clinical diagnostic testing to aid providers in diagnosing and treating their patients. The laboratory is inspected and certified by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Within the lab, is the:
- Blood bank, which provides blood products for inpatient and outpatient transfusions and provides prenatal screening for obstetrics.
- Chemistry, which is the largest department and commonly tests for cholesterol, glucose, kidney function panels and thyroid functioning.
- Hematology, which most commonly tests for a patient’s CBC (complete blood count), providing a quick snapshot of a patient’s health. A complete blood count includes a white blood cell count (infection fighting cells), red blood cells (oxygen carrying cells) and platelets (cells that help form a clot).
- Microbiology, where specimens are planted on special media to identify what organism is causing an infection and what antibiotic the patient’s provider would utilize to treat the infection.
The laboratory provides services 24 hours a day.
Outpatient phlebotomy is available:
Monday – Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturdays: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. for walk-ins
Patients generally receive an order for blood work from their health care provider and providers relay results back to the patient. Register at patient registration before proceeding to the outpatient laboratory located within Radiology.
