RANDOLPH, Vt. — Gifford Health Care is pleased to welcome Hannah Geldermann, DO, MPH, a family medicine physician providing both primary care and inpatient hospital care.
Geldermann brings a broad approach to family medicine, with interests that include women’s and reproductive health, contraception management, menopause care, and chronic disease management. She enjoys caring for patients across the lifespan and says the breadth of family medicine was one of the reasons she chose the specialty.
“I really love all types of medicine,” Geldermann said. “I love seeing the whole picture and taking care of people through all stages of life. I think it’s also really special to be able to take care of a whole family and get to know patients in that way.”
Working in both primary care and as a hospitalist also allows Geldermann to care for patients in different settings and continue developing the broad range of skills central to rural family medicine.
“I like taking care of patients in a more acute setting as well,” she said. “I think doing both inpatient and outpatient medicine keeps me sharp and makes me a better physician.”
Originally from Chicago, Geldermann first came to Vermont to attend Middlebury College, where she graduated cum laude with a joint major in environmental chemistry and a minor in global health. She later earned both a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Public Health from Midwestern University. She returned to Vermont for her family medicine residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center and served as chief resident during her final year. She has also served as a clinical instructor of family medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine.
Her background includes community health outreach, medical education, research, and work focused on health disparities and access to care. Those experiences helped shape her interest in practicing within a community-based health system.
Geldermann said she knew after attending college in Vermont that she wanted to make the state her home.
“I really want to stay in Vermont,” she said. “I wanted to be a physician in a place where I would be integrated into the community. It’s really important to treat patients in a way where you understand where they’re coming from, and one of the best ways to do that is to be part of the community where you work.”
That philosophy also shapes Geldermann’s approach in the exam room. Rather than prescribing a single path forward, she emphasizes listening, shared understanding, and finding an approach that works for each patient.
“It’s not really my job to dictate how somebody lives their life, but rather to share my knowledge and expertise, meet people where they are, and try to find out what works for them in their life,” she said.
Outside of work, Geldermann enjoys hiking, biking, and skiing. She lives in Vermont with her husband, Tucker, who is also training to become a family medicine physician, and their nine-year-old miniature pet pig, Bernice.
