RANDOLPH, VT — Gifford Health Care is pleased to welcome Ellen M. Stein, MD, MBA, FAEMS, FAWM, an emergency medicine physician with experience in rural emergency care, EMS leadership, and wilderness medicine.
Dr. Stein brings a diverse background to her work in emergency medicine. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from Dartmouth Medical School, completed an EMS Fellowship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and holds a Master of Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Most recently, Dr. Stein served as an emergency medicine physician with the University of Vermont Medical Group, working in emergency departments at Central Vermont Medical Center, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, and the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Throughout her career, Dr. Stein has combined emergency department care with a strong commitment to emergency medical services (EMS) and prehospital medicine. She previously served as Medical Director for Vermont EMS District 6 and has extensive experience training and supporting paramedics and EMS providers.
Her interest in EMS began long before medical school.
“I spent many years volunteering with EMS and working overnight shifts with Rescue Inc. while holding another job,” Dr. Stein said. “That experience shaped my path and ultimately led me to pursue emergency medicine.”
Dr. Stein also brings expertise in wilderness medicine, having served as a physician with the Himalayan Rescue Association at Everest Base Camp and along the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal.
Her work has taken her to remote and challenging environments around the world, but she says rural communities like those in Vermont share many of the same values.
“Living and practicing in a rural area means understanding the environment people live in,” she said. “Wilderness medicine may not always be directly applicable in the emergency department, but in places like Vermont, where people spend so much time outdoors, it’s part of the context of caring for our community.”
Dr. Stein says one of the most meaningful parts of emergency medicine is the opportunity to connect with patients during difficult moments.
“We meet people at important points in their lives,” she said. “Even in a busy emergency department, it’s meaningful to hear people’s stories and learn about who they are.”
Outside of medicine, Dr. Stein spends much of her time outdoors mountain biking, hiking, and exploring local trails.
“I’m excited to get to know the trails around Randolph and the surrounding communities,” she said.
