RANDOLPH, Vt.— For the second straight year, Gifford’s three-day Last Mile Ride, Walk and Run to support end-of-life care set new participation and fundraising records. Between the three in-person events and virtual options, there were 560 total participants. The result is $187,000 for Gifford’s palliative care program, assisting families whose loved ones are on life’s last mile.
Gifford Vice President of Development and Public Relations, Ashley Lincoln is the event organizer.
“These funds will be used in meaningful ways to support Gifford patients and families during difficult times of heartache and loss. That support looks different for everyone each unique and wonderful,” Lincoln said.
The Last Mile Fundraiser started Saturday, August 13 with a gravel and road bicycle ride, continued Friday evening August 19 with a walk/5k run and concluded Saturday, August 20 with a 75-mile motorcycle ride through several communities including South Royalton, Chelsea, Barre, Williamston and Randolph.
“My mom was sick here a few years ago and they took good care of her,” motorcycle ride participant, Shirly Hook said. “It’s well worth doing this for everybody.”
Ben Deflorio from Randolph Center was the men’s top finisher in Friday’s 5k (18:48.2). Bea Lake from Randolph was the top women’s finisher (22:58.0). You can find complete race results through 802 Timing by clicking here.

“These three days are my favorite days of the year,”
Lincoln said. “My expectations are always exceeded. To once again see new participation and fundraising records set is just extraordinary. I am as grateful as I am appreciative.”
Since 2006, more than $1 million has gone to assist families whose loved ones are in life’s last mile.
