Randolph, VT — Gifford Health Care is pleased to welcome Thomas T. Schmidt, MD, a neurologist, to its medical staff. Dr. Schmidt provides outpatient neurological care and serves as an inpatient consultant for adults with a wide range of neurological conditions.
Dr. Schmidt completed his neurology residency and internal medicine internship at the University of Vermont Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from The University of Toledo College of Medicine. His clinical experience includes EEGs, lumbar punctures, occipital nerve blocks, and Botox® treatment for chronic migraine.
Dr. Schmidt is known for his patient-centered approach to care, emphasizing careful listening, observation, and shared decision-making.
“Neurology relies heavily on truly understanding the patient—through conversation, examination, and observation,” said Dr. Schmidt. “I value taking the time to listen carefully, to involve patients and families in decisions, and to help them understand what’s happening and what options are available to them.”
Before entering medicine, Dr. Schmidt spent more than a decade as a science educator, a background that continues to shape his clinical practice.
“Education is a large part of medicine,” he said. “My goal is not just to make decisions for patients, but to help them understand their condition, their care, and why certain things may be happening.”
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Schmidt has experience in medical education and teaching. During his residency, he provided bedside and didactic instruction to medical students and was nominated for the Gold Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dr. Schmidt has previously practiced neurology in Vermont, Maine, and Michigan and brings experience in both outpatient and inpatient neurological care. He values practicing in rural settings and appreciates the sense of community that defines Vermont.
“The pace, the people, and the strong sense of community are a good fit for me,” he shared.
“Access to specialty care is essential to the health of rural communities,” said Michael Costa, President and CEO of Gifford Health Care. “Dr. Schmidt brings deep experience, a thoughtful approach to patient care, and a strong commitment to education, all of which strengthen our ability to meet neurological care needs close to home.”
