Emergency medicine physician Dr. A. Nicole Thran has joined Gifford Medical Center full-time, providing care in the Randolph hospital’s 24-hour Emergency Department.
A native of New York City, Dr. Than attended Tufts University in Medford, Mass., earning her bachelor’s degree in biology. She went on to medical school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Her internship and residency in emergency medicine were at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester.
Dr. Thran has worked in emergency medicine since 1991 at hospitals in Connecticut, Virginia, Rhode Island, Oklahoma and, since 2012, in Vermont at Rutland Regional Medical Center and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. There she was what is known as a locums tenens physician.
“I’ve worked in so many places that I have broad experience in different settings, from level 1 trauma centers down,” says Dr. Thran.
She has been visiting Vermont since she was a child. Her family owned land in West Dummerston since before she was born. An outdoor sports enthusiast, she moved to Quechee full-time this fall.
She joins Gifford for the opportunity to provide care at a high-quality medical center and employer in rural Vermont.
“I love it. It’s very friendly. Everybody is very outgoing and helpful. It’s like a family,” she says of her new workplace.
Dr. Thran is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians as well as a subgroup, the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians, and a second subgroup on ultrasound.
Her clinical interests include emergency medicine, ultrasound, women’s issues and indigent care.
Dr. Thran is a mother of three, including two children in college and one in high school. She enjoys running, biking, swimming, triathlons, skiing, painting and traveling.
