Dr. Derek Chase has accepted a permanent position in Gifford’s Orthopedic Department. He has been a locum orthopedic provider at Gifford since January 2017, and previously worked at Northwestern Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in St. Albans, VT. He recently returned from Lake Tahoe where he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and traveled abroad as a physician for the U.S. Ski Team.
Dr. Chase is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery, knee and muscle-sparing anterior hip replacement, upper extremity surgery, and fracture care. He emphasizes individualized treatment through patient education, informed patient choice, and always encourages starting with non-operative treatment whenever an option.
He received a BA in Economics from University of Colorado, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and completed his Surgical Internship and Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of California, San Diego.
A native Vermonter, he grew up in Calais and attended U-32, where he played hockey, captained the soccer and lacrosse teams, and was named an All American athlete.
“I returned to Vermont because I love treating Vermonters and understand our lifestyle,” he said. “I enjoy helping people return to their favorite sport – whether that be skiing, stacking wood, or corralling grandchildren.”
Dr. Chase is now seeing patients in Randolph and at the Gifford Health Center in Berlin-Specialty Care. To schedule an appointment call 728-2430.
