Join our Gifford volunteers
Whether you’re looking to give back to the community, stay active in retirement, build your resume, or learn new skills, we have many volunteer opportunities at Gifford! More than 100 volunteers work throughout the main medical center and in multiple clinic locations, serve on our Board of Directors, staff the front information desk; help out in various departments; visit with residents in the Menig Nursing Home; and much more.
Ranging in age from students to retirees, volunteers contribute more than 19,000 hours to Gifford each year. We also work with local schools to offer job shadowing. Job-shadowing students observe an employee’s work for a brief period of time, but do not provide a service.
Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (802) 728-2324 for more information on volunteering or job shadowing.
One of the unique volunteer opportunities at Gifford is with our Chaplaincy Program, which was created in 2000 with the help of area clergy. This team offers spiritual guidance and listening ears to nursing home residents and patients in need. Each volunteer chaplain receives special training to provide spiritual care for all situations with the goal of helping individuals and families fully explore their own personal beliefs and aspirations.
Our chaplains believe:
- Every person is on a unique spiritual journey with inner strengths of and yearings for – love, hope, and meaning.
- We all need a friend along the way who is willing to listen with a compassionate, non-judgmental ear and to offer whatever support and counsel which might be needed.
- We stand ready to provide whatever fair materials a patient or family might find helpful. And are happy to alert community faith leaders at the patient’s request.
In addition, the hospital employs a part-time chaplain and maintains the Chun Chapel near the Visitors Entrance. The chapel was named in memory of Dr. Kwang Chun, a Gifford trustee and chief of surgery. Call the chaplain at (802) 728-2107 to learn more about the program.
Started as the Randolph Sanatorium Ladies Aid Society in 1906, Gifford Auxiliary community projects and financial contributions support our mission to provide compassionate, high-quality care to all who pass through our doors.
Since 1956 the popular Thrift Shop, the Auxiliary’s main endeavor and primary revenue source, has transformed discarded clothing and unused clutter into useful items for people in need as well as bargain-hunting shoppers. Many of the Auxiliary’s 100-plus members help staff the Thrift Shop: cleaning and mending clothes, stocking shelves, and ringing up and bagging customer purchases. In 2016 the Auxiliary made a $1 million contribution to Gifford’s Vision for the Future Campaign, funds that were raised primarily through small-dollar sales at the shop.
Over the years Auxiliary funds have consistently supported a range of community projects and Gifford services including annual scholarships for high school and LNA students; well-child clinics; adult daycare special gifts; annual “wish list” funding for medical equipment; and special hospital department needs. An active 12-member Auxiliary Board of Directors reviews requests for Gifford equipment, building, and program needs.
